Creation of the illustrations and their future 3D design as paper toys. The characters have been folded, cut and assembled by hand. Turnaround / stop motion / frame by frame

How to make a Paper Toy step by step

These are the different steps to follow to create a Paper Toy :

• First I make a sketch of each character to visualise them as a whole and get a better picture of it. This helps me organise my work.
• Once I’m done with the drawings, I picture it with its 3D volume to create the pattern via Adobe Illustrator
• Then I print one blank template for each paper toy to ensure I’m consistent with their sizes. 
• Once I’m happy with the result, I use Adobe Illustrator again to colour my character, in this case the pirate, the princess and the viking.
• I print my designs in colour before moving to pasting.
• Lastly I assemble the different patterns together to bring life to my paper toys.

Kids and DIY workshop

Paper toys can be very elaborate and require true skills and mastery especially when it comes to the dimensions that need to be precise so that the distributed patterns can be folded correctly into the desired shape. Last it is essential that you are very meticulous with the cutting and folding. To conclude I’d say paper toys is very fun to be made and is great craft for kids workshops, not to forget that you can use that technique to create a mascot as a 3D object.
