Designing modern characters

Creating characters from scratch is a huge part of my job. I am often called upon to illustrate colorful characters whether they’re human or whimsical and use it in a playful medium to help companies boost their communication. I adapt my sketches to any type of medium whether it’s print or web. My job, as an illustrator is to offer a great variety of character design to help make your choice. Those brand characters will help build your company’s identity. 

Communication using Scenarised/scripted drawing 

I’ve come to work on behalf of a bank from Bordeaux and created different types of characters using vector graphics. The objective was to create a “serious board game”. Words in the brief included: fun, playful and a coherent and lively universe. This concept was destined for employees to help them evaluate their job knowledge. I had to caricature some types of characters so that they would clearly represent a wide range of people. On the left you can take a look at all the characters I designed. 

Attention to details 

Given that the survey’s questions varied depending on the customer’s job, age or family status (married, common law or civil union), I had to bring some personalised details to the characters so that they would be easily recognisable. I chose to represent them with very large heads so that I could emphasize some of their facial features and expressions : the hair, mouth, smile, ears etc. This really makes the character spring to life. Each design is unique and has its own details, like the accessories (glasses, caps, handbags or jewels) to bring some extra dimension to the illustrations.

When put together in a composition, those sketches will help make your communication fun and playful while still conveying the right message.

Creating characters for the OCIRP

The OCIRP and the 4event Paris agency needed an illustrator to work with them on the theme of “families of the future”. I was contacted by my illustrator agent to create varied characters of different ages and of both sexes. The OCIRP has existed for more than 50 years and helps protect people in the event of widowhood, orphanhood, handicap or dependence.  So many different character profiles to represent while keeping the futuristic twist in mind. I designed an ultra-connected family with a goldfish robot as a pet, a skateboarder with his hoverboard, a couple and their self balancing wheel, a cosmonaut. I used my imagination to picture what people will look like in the future. I like adding extra details to the faces and playing with the characters’ expressions. I feel like adding accessories helps figuring out the character’s personality and background story. 

An original ad campaign 

Those sketches were used for an advertising campaign that was published in a magazine, on the web and in the form of posters too. The 4event agency, based in Paris, did the whole art direction. The illustrations were created without sketches, directly from the Wacom tablet Cintiq 22 HD and using the Adobe Illustrator software, at A1 size.
